In this post we will talk about building a shed and what lean to plans we (me and my wife) used. If you are looking for the same shed plans that helped us with our sun room and skip all of this, Click Here.
Ok let’s get started. After you have run out of space in your house like we did (my wife collects and keeps everything) you will need to find other storage options. Some of the paid storage sheds are pretty good but always away from your house.
Building A Storage Shed
Building a storage shed on your land, closer to your house, is one of the best options you could possibly choose.
- Security is way better
- You can keep an eye on the shed personally.
After we built our sun room we still needed a storage shed.
First things first, check with your city or state and see what permits are required. In most states, like Minnesota, if your adding a small lean to onto your house, you don’t need anything. But for an additional storage shed we had to get a building permit and an inspector. Don’t worry the inspector is usually cheap, it was $40 for us and he inspected our building site in less than 48 hours.
After permits and the correct inspection is all in order, you need to get some lean to plans or shed plans. This really isn’t that hard either. You can get some free ones online (don’t really suggest this method) or purchase a set. Purchasing a set is so simple and inexpensive it’s a wonder why the free ones are even offered.
We don’t really suggest the free plans. A unnamed friend copied some off a site that were “free” plans. After his shed was built, he was questioned on where he got his shed plans from his city. He told them he got the free ones off a site. which we won’t mention. They gave him a $20,000 fine for building codes that weren’t met. Yeah I know, $20k isn’t the end of the world but he could have just bought plans for less than $40, they usually come with everything you need to be up to “code” and what not, and save $19,960.
Ok sorry for the sidetrack, lol, I do that every now and then.
Choosing your materials for building a shed can be the most important step. We want to build our sheds in an inexpensive way but not cheaply. By this I mean that we want to get inexpensive lumber but not build something that will fall apart with 15mph winds.
Just a general storage shed. Most storage sheds are built the same way. Of course storage shed plans differ from size. These are the types of plans you can expect from the purchased lean to plans opposed to the “free” shed plans.
We hope this helped you a bit. Our future posts will be reviews of different purchased shed plans opposed to the free lean to plans.
